President Sworn In
Nelson Leeson took the oath of office and was sworn in by Oscar Mercer, Chair, Council of Elders as the President of the Nation at the start of the Executive meeting on December 15, 2008.
In his opening statement Nelson highlighted the positive achievements of the Nation during the past four years. He identified several challenges for the new Executive. These challenges include building an economic base to achieve economic self sufficiency. In his statement Nelson noted that while community based initiatives are essential it's also necessary that we act collectively as a Nation. To achieve these broad goals he asked for the support of chiefs, councillors, elders and citizens to address outstanding issues.
Nelson took a few minutes to specifically thank the two candidates who ran for the Presidency and to compliment them on the quality of their campaigns. Nelson stated “What I want is the best for our people” and he invited the other candidates to support him in working towards this goal.
Nelson concluded his remarks by extending season's greetings.
